Founded in 1916 by Sherrill Whiton and chartered in 1924 by the New York State Board of Regents, the New York School of Interior Design has for nearly one hundred years been preparing aspiring interior designers to join one of design’s most exciting and important professions. Today, the value of educational credentials to the interior design community is greater than ever.

NYSID is one among only a handful of fully-accredited colleges in the United States dedicated solely to the interior design profession. And NYSID is the only such institution in the New York City metropolitan area.

New York is without question the design capital of the United States. Our city is home to leading design and architectural firms, showrooms, and some of the most magnificent residential and commercial spaces in the world. Being a student at NYSID means you will immerse yourself in the world of design, both inside and outside the classroom.

While other colleges and universities offer interior design programs, none can offer what you will find at NYSID: an institution at the epicenter of the design world whose facilities, equipment, faculty, and staff are devoted entirely to the education and practice of interior design and that of several related fields. What’s more, NYSID’s BFA and MFA programs are ranked among the top 15 programs in the United States (DesignIntelligence, 2008); NYSID is one of only two colleges with this recognition in New York City. And US News & World Report (2008) ranked our MFA program in the top four nationwide. If you still need more convincing, pick up any design or home magazine and you will almost certainly find the work of NYSID graduates featured prominently.

So, take some time to explore our Web site. Then, contact NYSID—we are ready to answer your questions, arrange a tour of our facilities, or have you visit a class.
