Transforming Designers into Leaders
As the practice of interior design grows more sophisticated, so too must the education of designers. NYSID’s graduate programs produce future design leaders who can synthesize the conceptual and practical to change the way we live. The principles of sustainability, globalism, and social responsibility infuse our curriculum. We prepare designers who will be the vanguard of interior design.
The majority of graduate classes take place in NYSID’s sleek, LEED-Platinum-certified Graduate Center, which opened in 2010 and was designed by Gensler. Interiors & Sources magazine called this space a “facility that fosters community and collaboration, and embodies the essence of the ‘studio’ atmosphere.”
NYSID’s graduate programs all require full-time study. The MPS programs, however, are designed for the working professional, with classes in the evenings and on weekends.
Which of our graduate programs is right for you? It depends on your interest and level of experience.
NYSID’s MFA programs immerse students in every aspect of interior design, producing design thinkers with cutting-edge skills:
MFA-1: The Professional-level Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design is a three-year program structured to provide an advanced interior design degree to students who have a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum emphasizes research and analysis applied to a wide range of user groups, taking into account global practice, sustainable design, and social justice. A portfolio is optional for admission, although a qualifying workshop is required for students who come from a non-design background.
MFA-2: The Post-Professional Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design is a two-year, terminal degree program that provides professionals in interior design or closely related fields with the opportunity for advanced scholarship. Students hit the ground running in this program that focuses on a profound and holistic experience of design. Advanced portfolio required.
NYSID’s MPS programs are designed to give working designers a competitive edge through specialized skills and knowledge:
MPS-H: The Master of Professional Studies in Healthcare Interior Design is a one-year post-professional program providing an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment in which interior designers and healthcare professionals work together, designing healing environments based on evidence and research, business considerations, and the principles of design. This unique and visionary program prepares professionals to meet the demands of the current boom in healthcare construction and design.
MPS-S: The Master of Professional Studies in Sustainable Interior Environments is a one-year, post-professional program that focuses on specialized knowledge, thinking, and skills, structured to prepare design professionals to assume leadership roles in developing and maintaining sustainable interior spaces that will positively impact the world.
MPS-L: The Master of Professional Studies in Interior Lighting Design is a one-year, post-professional degree that provides extensive education in the area of illumination for the interior environment. Changing technologies, new laws that mandate energy efficiency, and the demand for inspired solutions have created strong demand for lighting specialists with a deep understanding of people and interiors.
