NYSID's Mission & Vision

Founded in 1916, the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) a private, not-for-profit college devoted to the design of the interior environment and related disciplines. It is dedicated to the advancement of the discipline of interior design through education, research, professional development, public programs, and community outreach. Critical to its mission is the engagement with New York City’s cultural institutions, access to design resources, and its immersion in the city’s economy.

NYSID’s guiding principle is that the successful design of an interior space improves human welfare, and that the interior design profession assumes an important role in ensuring that these spaces are beautiful, functional, healthy, safe, and built in a socially and environmentally conscientious way.

This ideal is put into practice by a dedicated faculty of highly qualified interior designers, architects, art historians, and authorities in the field who guide a diverse student body of more than 700 full- and part-time students. NYSID provides a certificate as well as undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The College is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  The BFA and MFA Professional-Level (MFA-1) programs are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).

Recently appointed President David Sprouls is leading the NYSID community as the existing strategic plan is used to guide and implement their vision and goals for the future. While honoring its history rooted in the decorative arts and interior design, the College’s mission was broadened to take on a more holistic approach to design by expanding its academic offerings with new degree programs in the history of the interior and decorative arts, sustainable design, interior lighting design, and healthcare design. Through the creation of NYSID's Institute for Continuing and Professional Studies, professional designers and those exploring their interest in design can acquire the knowledge they need to advance their careers and broaden their skills. NYSID's summer Pre-College Program offers high school students the opportunity to spend two weeks in the heart of the design capitol of the world, working on real projects and meeting practicing designers.
