New York School of Interior Design 2018 Commencement Ceremony

New York School of Interior Design is thrilled to announce acclaimed designer Juan Montoya and award-winning architect Gil Schafer will receive honorary doctorate degrees at NYSID’s Commencement exercises on May 24. As part of the ceremony, Montoya will give the keynote address to the audience of approximately 120 graduating students, families, and friends. The ceremony will take place at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at 11 AM. Read more.

Alumni Mentorship Program: Spotlight on Ashley Dai & Erin Wells

Launched in the fall of 2013, NYSID’s Alumni Mentorship Program pairs students with established alumni for a year-long professional growth opportunity. This year, fourteen pairs participated. Erin Wells (BFA 2004), who works as a Principal in the Interior Design firm Ageloff Associates, mentored Ashley Dai, a current MFA-1 student. Both share insights about their experience here.

The New York School of Interior Design is pleased to announce it will honor Suzanne Rheinstein, owner of HOLLYHOCK, landscape architect Jorge Sanchez, and principal landscape designer of Edwina von Gal + Co., Edwina von Gal at its Annual Gala. The ceremonial event will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at a private club in New York City. Interior designer, Alexa Hampton; editorial director of Hearst Design Group, Newell Turner; owner of Decorative Antiques Ltd., Betsey Ruprecht; and philanthropist, Maria Spears will serve as the Gala co-chairs. Students Conduct Research for NYC Health & Hospitals

NYSID faculty member Dr. Nicolas Watkins, Performance Analytics Manager for Gensler, and Breeze Glazer, Director of NYSID’s Master of Professional Studies in Healthcare Interior Design, guided a team of NYSID MPS-H students as they conducted research, on behalf of the NYC Health & Hospitals System, at Ida G. NYSID Alumnae Named IFDA Rising Stars

Samantha Goldman and Samantha Polkow, often referred to as Sam + Sam, share more than a first name. They share a business philosophy and friendship that make them a match made in heaven. Sam + Sam met during their last semester at NYSID in a class taught by Dr. Ellen Fisher, and a friendship instantly blossomed. Sam + Sam teamed up on class projects, discovering that their individual talents were perfectly suited to teamwork.  The rest is history.

Founders of Handin Browne, a full-service interior design firm based in New York City and established in December 2017, Sam + Sam were together named a Rising Star of Interior Design by International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA). Read more.

The Robert Herring Travel Prize Continues to Transforms Interior Designers and Their Designs

Ashley Crooke, the 2017 winner, traveled to Chile, a country she had been captivated by since grade school. "I immediately felt a rush of adrenaline when I realized I was being awarded the prize," said Ashley. Trauma-informed Design Creates a Safe Space for Children

The Senior Director of the Queens Child Advocacy Center (CAC) reached out to the College with a unique challenge: though designed to be child-friendly, the bright, toy-filled space might be too stimulated for her clients. DIFFA’s Dining By Design is Student Team Work and Design Excellence at its Best

Last month, a team of NYSID students designed an installation for the 2017 Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA) Dining by Design event which took place March 17-21 at Pier 92 in New York City.  This year, BFA students Garrett Carter, May Ghadanfar, Bonnie Hoeker, and Kwanghae Lee created a dining display inspired by a pulsating heartbeat. "Interconnectivity" student installation

“Interconnectivity,” a special design installation created by five NYSID students for this year’s NY Art, Antique & Jewelry Show was unveiled at the show’s grand opening on November 20.  The project was Led by NYSID alumnus and instructor Stefan Steil of Steilish Interior Design & Architecture, and designed by students Daniella Brecher (MFA ’17), Garrett Carter (BFA ’16), Valerie Genovese (BFA ’16), and Rikki Tenenbaum (BFA ’16). See photos and read more about the installation.

NYSID Students Help Design Police Precinct in Brownsville

People's Precinct ProgramNYSID students are getting the exciting opportunity to design a section of the 73rd Police Precinct in Brownsville, Brooklyn as part of the “People’s Precinct Program,” which is being launched by the NYC Department of Design and Construction and the Town + Gown initiative in an effort to link schools and government through design.
