Presidential statement: NYSID stands with Dreamers and those impacted by the government’s decision to rescind the DACA program

Dear NYSID community,

Welcome to the 2017-18 academic year! We’re happy to have students back on our campuses, and we’re excited about the possibilities this year holds.

Earlier this week, the federal government announced its plan to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which prevents the deportation of nearly 800,000 immigrants brought to the United States as children without documentation.

At this challenging time, we have an opportunity to celebrate our very special environment and remember that colleges are made better by a multitude of voices and by a diverse student body. NYSID prides itself on advancing the understanding of quality of life in the built environment. But quality of life must be available to everyone. We’re proud that NYSID is a diverse college with students from 34 countries, representing 26% of our student body.

We want to assure the entire NYSID community that we stand with Dreamers and those impacted by the government’s decision to rescind the DACA program. This fall, let’s take every opportunity to nurture one another’s intellectual and creative engagement, promote inclusion, and express compassion for one another.

Yours truly,
David Sprouls
President
