Dialogues on Design

Dialogues on Design, a series of six conversations, returns for its fourth year. Curated by the editorial staff of Hearst Design Group and Newell Turner, editorial director of Hearst Design Group, each session will feature leading designers and creative thinkers. Designers will discuss their approach to work: their inspiration and influences, their leadership and response to trends, and the evolution of the field. Each Dialogue on Design concludes with a reception where the audience is invited to meet and talk with the designers.

Participation is by subscription; $300 for the series of six programs.

About Newell Turner

Newell Turner is the editorial director of the Hearst Design Group, where he is responsible for the collective editorial direction of ELLE DECOR, House Beautiful, and VERANDA, since October 2012. He was also editor in chief of House Beautiful, from April 2010 to January 2015.  In 2012, he implemented an innovative new approach to magazine publishing in which each of the three Hearst Design Group magazines’ core teams work in collaboration with enhanced shared departments, including photography, market, and features copy. Under Turner’s editorship, House Beautiful won its first National Magazine Award—the magazine industry’s equivalent of the Oscar—in 2012 and was a finalist in the category in 2013.

Turner has reported on interior design, architecture, product design and the lifestyles of upscale consumers throughout his 30 years in publishing. He joined House Beautiful as style director in 2006. Prior to that, he launched Hamptons Cottages & Gardens and, later, its sister publications: Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens and Connecticut Cottages & Gardens. Turner served as style editor at House & Garden in the late 1990s, where he covered home furnishings and design markets in the United States and Europe. He was also an editor at Metropolitan Home for 12 years, and for a short time served as style director of HomeStyle. He has had a variety of experiences in new media including Room12.com, a guide for hip urban travelers that he helped found and develop in 2002.

Turner holds a BA in Journalism and Southern Studies with advanced work specializing in magazine journalism and design from the University of Mississippi. He is a current member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and serves on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design. His charitable interests include The Smile Train, Aid to Artisans and Mons Nubifer Sanctus.
