Last month, students from the MPSL (Master of Professional Studies in Lighting Design) program presented their competition entries at LEDucation, one of the largest global lighting trade shows and conferences, hosted this year in New York City.

Students from professor Basar Erdener's Luminaire Design course responded to the program for the IESNYC Student Lighting Competition, which called for students to build on 3-dimensional research that examined how light contributes to the cyclical aspect of life in response to this year's subject, Circle of Light

"I was thrilled to participate in the IESNYC Student Lighting Competition at LEDucation, where I showcased a 3-dimensional study on repurposing materials for a circular economy. Using oyster shells as the primary component, my installation was designed with a focus on sustainability and a design for disassembly,” says Mrinalini Kalla ‘23 (MPSL). “It was amazing to see people recognize me from my competition entry at interviews and industry events after the trade show."

At LEDucation, exhibitors across the globe displayed state-of-the-art lighting and technologies. Students walked the show floor with MPSL program director Shaun Fillion, observing innovative demonstrations by manufacturers and learning about the latest trends in the lighting industry. Students agreed attending this trade exhibition was a tremendously beneficial to them, given the opportunity to observe almost all the product manufacturers in one location, demonstrating products and innovations in technology.

The seminars went in-depth on subjects that addressed the most significant problems the lighting industry is currently dealing with, elevating lighting practices. Professor Fillion joined professor AC Hickox, Domingo Gonzalez Associates, Dan Wang-Munson, RAB Lighting and Aaron Smith, Finelite for a panel discussion “The Challenges of Assessing Glare” about the difficulties of evaluating glare, what discomfort and disability glare are, and how they affect occupants' safety and comfort.
